ICMR JRF 2021

On Sunday, September 12, 2021, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will host a national level test to determine the eligibility of Indian national applicants for JRF awards through ICMR. The award of JRF to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding placement in a medical college/hospital/university/national laboratory/institution of higher learning and research as applicable. Fellowship will be initiated from the date of Ph.D. enrolment (should be within one year from the date of issue of JRF award letter) and it will be treated as date of joining. Total duration of fellowship is five years or submission of Ph.D. thesis (whichever is earlier).

Mode of Examination: Computer Based Test (CBT)/ONLINE

Application Processing and Examination Fee:

  • Fee for General/EWS/OBC: Rs. 1500/-  + Transaction charges as applicable.
  • Fee for SC/ST: Rs. 1200/-  + Transaction charges as applicable.
  • Fee for PwBD: Exempted from payment of fee

Mode of payment: THROUGH DEBIT/CREDIT CARD/NET BANKING (payment through UPI should be avoided)

Pattern of examination: The paper consists of 2 major Sections. The first section is the Aptitude Section (Section A) that will consist of 50 questions carrying 1 mark each and will be based on i) scientific phenomenon in everyday life, ii) general knowledge in sciences, and iii) common statistics. The second section is the Subject Specific Section (Section B and C). Section B is for Life Sciences candidates and Section C is for Social Sciences candidates. Section B and C consist of 100 questions each and the candidate has to attempt any 75 questions. If the candidate attempts more than 75 questions in Section B or C, then only the first 75 questions will be considered for evaluation. 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Cut-off for selection: The final result will be based on aggregate of 55% marks obtained in both the Sections for General and OBC candidates and 50% for SC/ST and PH/VH candidates.

Syllabus: As prescribed by UGC

Location of Examination Centres: Tentatively 21 cities in India (City name and centre codes can be found in the ICMR brochure)

Educational Qualification: M.Sc. /M.A. or equivalent degree (subject areas mentioned in Section 5, pg. no. 7 of the ICMR JRF brochure) with minimum 55% marks for General/EWS/OBC candidates and 50% for the SC/ST and PwBD candidates. A candidate who is appearing/has appeared in the final year (IV/VI Semester whichever is applicable, and final year where Semester system is not there) of M.Sc./M.A. or equivalent examination during the session (2020-2021) can also apply for the exam as RA (Result Awaited). Such candidates will have to submit the attestation format (given in annexure-I duly certified by the Head of the Department/Institute over his/her signature and rubber stamp (with address and name) where he/she is appearing in the final year examination. However, such candidates shall be admitted to the Exam provisionally and shall be considered eligible for JRF only after they submit the proof of having passed the Master’s Degree examination with requisite percentage. The M.Sc. /M.A. or equivalent degree mark sheet must be submitted to ICMR, latest by 31st December, 2021 otherwise candidature will automatically be forfeited.

Age limit: The age limit for admission to the eligibility test is 28 years as on 30-09-2021 (upper age limit relaxable up to five years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST, PwBD and female candidates, three years in the case of OBC category.

  • Junior Research fellow (JRF)

1st year Rs. 31,000/-

2nd year Rs. 31,000/-

  • Senior Research Fellow (SRF) – If an upgradation report is filed after completion two years

3rd year Rs. 35,000/-

4th year Rs. 35,000/-

5th year Rs. 35,000/-

Contingency grant:

Rs. 20,000/- per annum

The contingent grant can only be used for the reasons listed below.

1. Obtaining books and papers that are relevant to the study subject. In most cases, no more than 25% of the entire yearly contingent grant may be used for this reason.

2. The Fellow will be eligible for Travel Allowance (TA) / Daily Allowance (DA) while on tour.

3. Expenses for chemicals, reagents, stationery, and postal expenses, as well as registration fees for scientific conferences.

4. Computational charges.

Documents Required/to be Attached with the application form: The candidates must upload their scanned copies of certificates/documents in support of their educational qualifications, marks, date of birth, category etc. If a candidate fails to upload scanned copies of the requisite documents as above, his/her candidature will be cancelled and he/she will not be allowed to participate in subsequent stages of selection/admission process.
